If I owned a lakeside cabin, I would watch every sunset from my boat. A cabin in the woods is a dream that so many people have, I thought I would would share my version. Cabins are unique, with their own smells and sounds. They always seem to be set in place with a picturesque background, that makes you never want to leave. You notice things when you are staying at a Lakeside Cabin that you normally don’t. I would always notice fish Jumping on the surface of the lake, or the distant call of a loon. The Northwoods is where my cabin would be.

The Fishing
What would a lakeside cabin be without a trusty fishing boat. My boat measures up at 16 feet long, and it has a traditional v bottom design. It looks amazing docked along side a log cabin. The perfect lake house for rent would have a set of stairs or a walking path down to the boat launch. An ideal place to do my my John Candy impersonation from the movie The Great Outdoors. Fishing up north at a lakeside cabin, always makes great memories. When the Lilly Pads are up in the summer time, a plastic frog is my favorite type of bait. However, I have lost a few because I neglected to tie on a steel leader. You know what that means. Snot Rockets. Those toothy northern pike will make a mockery of your tackle supply. They have no respect for inner workings of a man’s wallet. Anyway, Those smallmouth bass love the top water frogs too!

The Campfire at a Lakeside Cabin
The simple smell of wood smoke near a Lakeside Cabin is hard to beat. Combined with the smell of food cooking over the open fire, and that memory will be stashed in your brain forever. Cast iron cookware is ideal for a campfire. It takes the high heat well and withstands the abuse from rocks and logs. It won’t scratch the way modern cookware does. If you are new to campfire cooking you should read my article How to start a Campfire.

If I had a lakeside cabin, I would have the kitchen wall lined with vintage cast iron pans and skillets. You can’t have this vintage cookware hanging on a nail, that would be no good. I would use some of these hooks that I make in my blacksmith shop to get the job done.

The Decor at a Lakeside Cabin
The decor of all the lakeside cabins that I have stayed in have all been of a north woods theme. Bears, moose, and northern pike. A lot of the furniture that I have noticed have been made from Pine wood. With a simple coat of clear lacquer finish, it looks very durable. Rustic rough sawn wood makes great benches and picture frames in a cabin.
Canoes are also a popular theme at a lakeside cabin. Every man has imagined himself canoeing down a lazy river with a load of fresh pelts, that he has trapped himself. If you have not, I invite you to take a minute and do so. The canoe would be birch bark, and the paddle, you have just made. With just 1 mile left to camp the sun is starting to set. An eagle flies overhead, and you look up to watch as you catch your breath. A heavy load in a canoe can be quite a burden. All that paddling is the reason your buckskins still fit after all these years. Your pelts are loaded in the front to help distribute the weight. Around the last bend in the river you spot your camp. The darkness sets just as you drag your handmade craft to shore, and think about cooking those fish for dinner. Finally, at your lakeside cabin, you gather some small sticks to start your fire and BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. Your alarm clock has gone off. It is 5:10, time for work, and you have to scrape the snow of your wife’s windshield.
How a Hammer Solves Problems… and Creates New Ones
In every garage in America, there’s a hammer that has solved more problems than it ever should have — and caused twice as many. “Grab that bigger hammer, will ya? This bolt won’t come loose.”“Wow! That is really stuck.”“Hold on, I’ll get a hammer.”“If you can’t fix it with a hammer, it must be an…
A Simple Campfire on a Cool March Night
The air was cool and damp tonight. The day had been warm almost 70 degrees in the afternoon. There was a few piles of snow left lingering from the late season blizzard we just had. March is always known for wild weather here in the midwest. Tonight felt like such a relief from the brutal…
