Brazing a horseshoe nail figurine makes for a fun afternoon. When finished you have an object that you could set on your desk, shelf, or give as a gift.

Brazing these horseshoe nails can be done with an acetylene torch, or a small handheld torch with map gas. The brazing rod is brass, and comes with a coating of white flux, to help keep the metal clean. I use a 3/16″ steel plate as a table when I am brazing. It works well, and is portable.

Some of the tools I use when brazing are

Needle Nose Pliers

Vise Grips

Shade 5 Glasses

Map Gas

The trick to Brazing a horseshoe nail figurine is keeping the heat from the torch low. Otherwise you will burn the Horseshoe nails right up. They are made from mild stee, and are quite thin. Brazing horseshoe nails together is a real trick, because if you reheat a joint it will fall apart. So you have to plan ahead and Braze all of your nails in one heat. When Brazing A Horseshoe Nail Figurine, I should mention that the nails come is a variety of sizes. The ones I am using for this project are #5 horseshoe nails. The even come in draft horse sizes which are much bigger. You can vary your projects by using 2 or 3 deferent sizes of horseshoe nails.

When your Horseshoe nail figurine is done, It will require some sort of finish. A clear lacquer in a spray can will work well. If you don’t use some kind of clear coat, it will eventually rust. Rust is not a bad finish if that’s the kind of look you are going for. You just don’t want it to show up unexpectedly.
