Starting a fire consists of 3 key elements. It can be done without, but Its best to use all three. Ignition, tinder, and wood. Ignition is the easy part for normal everyday people. Who won’t have a lighter or some matches . Some people won’t want to ask how do I start a fire without matches. There are more traditional ways to do it if you have the time, and want to teach your kids the old ways. No-one has time for that, especially if your hands are cold. Those Premium hot dogs are not going to cook themselves. So how do you make fire? No self respecting fire bug can just sit there watching the logs shrink, without wanting to give them a shove. A fire poker (like the ones I make) are a great tool for shuffling those logs just where you want them.

After the spark, you have to be able to catch it. That where the tinder is comes in. A large wad of dryer lint doesn’t stand a chance against a Bic lighter, or a match. If the ground is dry under your tinder, your right on track. Dryness is an important key to starting a fire. Corn chips are an amazing form of tinder for fire starting. Again, they have so much oil in them, they burn for several minutes. They are great to keep around if your learning how to start a campfire. Cotton balls smeared in Vaseline are my favorite fire tinder. They are super cheap, and burn for a long time. They are easily lit, too.

A simple fire starting kit is made from A Bic Lighter, Some Lubricated cotton balls, and some fatwood . In a clear zippy bag, these three things can save the day. Besides, they last for years shoved into a car trunk or truck toolbox. In my opinion. This is the easiest way to be prepare if someone asks you how do you start a camping fire. Ok let’s back track, Firewood! You can either buy fancy 7-dollar firewood from the side of the road, chop down the tree yourself, or you can do what my dad did and pay your kid five bucks for picking up sticks in the yard and burn those.
