Hay Budden Blacksmith Anvil on a poplar tree stump. Notice, I left the bark on, and we will see. Hold-down brackets are made from an old, Ford truck leaf-spring.

Extra long lag bolts to hold it down.

Hay Budden Blacksmith Anvil

In the past, I used a steel frame anvil stand. Unfortunately, this was not stable enough. It often shifted and moved. Defiantly, my Hay Budden Blacksmith Anvil was always bouncing around.

Cutting a leaf spring with a band saw

Next, I cut some old leaf springs salvaged from and old Ford truck. This worked well to hold down my Hay Budden Blacksmith Anvil. You can watch the video here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj-rC8Sjnm0

The stump is from a nice straight popular tree. I think leaving the bark on adds some visual interest. If the bark starts to fall off over time, I will just peel it all off. I have kept the bark on for its rustic appeal. The height of the stump is very important. Most important, measurements are to be taken while standing straight. Your arms should be hanging freely. The top of the Blacksmith anvil should be level with your fists.

Below is a list of woods that I think would work well for an anvil stump.

  • Oak

Mounting a Hay Budden Blacksmith Anvil

I used some 3/8″ lag bolts to secure the leaf spring sections to the anvil stump. I used a drill bit to make the holes in the wood. At the time, I was not sure if they were large enough. It is noted, after years worth of hammering and other monkey business, they are still tight. I used a thin piece of foam floor mat under my Hay Budden Blacksmith Anvil. I think that this helps with sound dampening. Also, the sound is greatly dampened when the bolts tighten up. Its stops the annoying ringing of the anvil.
