Recently I was forging a banana hanger for our countertop. I started again with the 3/8″ square stock. The idea behind a banana hanger it to keep air on all sides of the bananas. If one side comes in contact with a solid surface, it will ripen quicker on that spot. Lets make one.

First, I made a long round taper on the end, making sure everything is smooth with no rough spots.

Then, I used the horn of the anvil, to create the hook that the bananas will hang from. This should be a smooth taper free from burrs and rough spots. This will be a place where people frequently touch, so It needs to be defects.

An old horseshoe will serve as a base for this project. An overachiever could use some felt pads on the bottom of the shoe, to protect your countertop.

Next, I break out everyone’s best friend- the stick welder. A little dab here and a little dab there, and its ready for a bunch of bananas. This works great for when I am forging a banana hanger. After welding this, and using it for a few months I found out I needed an adjustment. The hanger was leaning to far forward, so the bananas wanted to tip forward if we bought a big bunch of them.

If you bring a banana into a blacksmith shop, its only a matter of time before you try and flatten it with a hammer. You can watch the video here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwaSvjJ2JN0&t=2s
